“Grace in place of grace”

Monday in Septuagesima Week: John 1:1-18.

“And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace (καὶ χάριν ἀντὶ χάριτος). For the Torah was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.”

That Greek word ἀντὶ usually means “in place of X.” Implication: the Torah was a form of grace. We have received even better grace in place of it.
