Wednesday of the first week in Advent: 1 Thessalonians 2:1-12
The first twelve verses of the chapter recount Paul’s behavior when he last came to Thessalonika. He used boldness (παρρησία, 2:2), not slick eloquence. He did not exploit his status as an apostle to make self-aggrandizing demands. It was important to him that his behavior should support and not belie the gospel message.
Paul’s failure to come a second time to visit the Thessalonians is ascribed to Satan’s hindering of him — sc. by his arrest and imprisonment.
